ABOUT
Here on the Elena Watches blog you will find reviews, recommendations, essays, character profiles and all other things historical and political TV. I’ll analyse the authenticity of shows and give you the context you need to watch on. And at times, I’ll talk about the shows that are history making.
Vintage and retro culture is all the rage. We all love to market ourselves as “lovers of the 90s” or “70s chicks”, even “y2k” is becoming a retro trend. But the word “history” is uttered and we think statistics from centuries ago, or old men in wigs signing away the lives of others with their ink pot and quill. Period dramas and historical TV series might make you think of hoop skirts and parasols and those tedious documentaries you were made to watch at school.
In reality, history is fascinating – history on TV even more so. It’s all the vintage fashion and music we’re obsessed with, combined with gripping stories that have led us to where we are today. They have led to who we are.
Let’s turn back the clock…

Let me introduce myself. I’m Elena, the writer of this blog. History and politics fascinate me and I am a lover of TV. So naturally, I obsess over historical and political shows – especially ones based on true events.
I also aspire to create my own.
I’m a creative writing graduate with studies in history, politics and screen and culture.
The content I typically watch is American, European and Australian. I’m German with a European childhood, living in Australia. And so, I’m drawn to international stories.
My favourite era is post-Second World War. Specifically, East Germany and the Berlin Wall.
I’m captivated by stories of individuals who have shaped the world we find ourselves in today – those who have challenged power and kept those who have it accountable.
TV series have the ability to shed light on characters whose stories are often untold in the mainstream, those who are left out in the retellings of history. Because of course, histories are told by those with power and so the powerless are erased. These stories can honour those who are forgotten and realign how we think about our past and present.
From the sets to costumes to the soundtrack, I love all that travels you back in time and immerses you into the world of a different era.
